Following the booming success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, the much awaited sequel Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released Dec. 15. Directed by Rian Johnson, this movie focuses mainly on Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), as his secluded lifestyle is upended by the arrival of Rey (Daisy Ridley), who is trying to convince Luke to train her so she can assist the Resistance as they are being pursued by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the rest of the First Order.

The movie is split into three separate but interwoven storylines, with Rey learning about the various sides of the force, Finn (John Boyega) and newly introduced character Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) going on an adventure to find a skilled codebreaker on the casino planet of Canto Bight and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and the Resistance trying to come up with a plan to escape the First Order’s pursuit. The thematic messages of each storyline come together nicely to tell a satisfying story about passing the baton to a new generation of force users to build a stronger resistance.

The film is highlighted by the intrigue surrounding Rey’s interactions with the villainous Kylo Ren as she tries to exploit his internal battle between the light and dark sides of the force. With Rian Johnson’s previous experiences in writing the complexities of anti-hero Walter White on the hit television show Breaking Bad, he is able to expertly weave an ambiguity into Kylo Ren’s motives that makes him a much more fascinating character than he was in the previous movie. The storyline is further strengthened by the growing strength of Rey, as her increasing mastery of the force draws the two closer and closer in strength.

Just as awe inspiring is Mark Hamill’s performance in his long-awaited return to his iconic role as Luke Skywalker. Instead of being a wise old sage as Alec Guinness was as Obi Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: A New Hope, Hamill plays a sullen jedi master who just wants to be left alone in his waning days. His slightly reluctant decision to train Rey allows the audience to view his insecurities in his own abilities and righteousness, following the mistakes he made in his training of Kylo Ren. In addition to his extraordinary dramatic performance, Hamill is able to add humor to the movie by providing the audience with some genuinely laugh out loud moments throughout the movie. With the first movie of the new trilogy focusing on Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, and the latest film focusing on Luke, it’s truly unfortunate that we will not get to see a movie with Carrie Fisher’s Leia as the main focus, due to her death last December.

While critical reviews have been highly positive surrounding the film, the latest installment of Star Wars has been quite polarizing among fans of the series. With a two year wait between movies, many fans formulated their own theories about the questions that were left by J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII. While Abrams’ brand of filmmaking is famous for its “mystery box” formula, Rian Johnson went with a different approach in how he definitively answered some of the mysteries that surrounded this new trilogy’s characters. This means the answers provided by this movie may have disappointed fans who had been fantasizing the last two years over the identity of Rey’s parents or the backstory of Supreme Leader Snoke, as the anticipation for the answers to these questions may have inflated people’s expectations to an unreasonable level.

Though some fans are downright angry about the movie, with the most radical of fans even creating a petition to strike the latest film from the Star Wars canon, ultimately Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a worthy addition to the Star Wars universe. Last Jedi is a fun, action-packed movie with plenty of twists and turns throughout, and will leave you more than satisfied by the conclusion of its final act. Those who enjoyed the original trilogy and are excited for this new generation of Star Wars characters will not be disappointed by this worthy sequel, which builds upon the solid foundation of Force Awakens to push the trilogy to new heights.
