On Nov. 9, 2018, members of the Hawk Writing Center attended the Secondary School Writing Center Association conference at George Mason University in Arlington, Virginia. The SSWCA conference is an annual meeting of high school writing centers that tutor throughout the state. This year’s theme was “Process and Progress,” so each writing center was tasked with evaluating and presenting on how they can make their school’s tutors go above and beyond.

Among those presenting at the conference were seniors Destiny Price and Kathryn Shepherd, presenting on maximizing outreach of the writing center, Shruthi Muralidaran and Tara Vasanth, presenting on establishing tutor credibility, Jennifer Nelson and Olivia Napier, presenting on the writing center curriculum and Brianna Latham, presenting on the next step for senior tutors after they graduate.

A number of other students from the Hawk Writing Center also attended the conference, supporting their classmates and attending different sessions to learn more about how to improve the Writing Center’s outreach, recruitment and tutoring techniques.

The Hawk Writing Center is open during all lunch periods Monday-Thursday and after school on Wednesdays, and the center will be holding their second College App Camp of the year after school on Dec. 5.
