Founded by sophomore Olivia Henry with Saoirse Farrell serving as vice president, the Mock Trial Club is one of the newest clubs within Hayfield’s repertoire.

The club meets every Thursday after school in room 2459 until about 4:15. In the club, students can undergo a hands-on experience of going through the judicial process.

Henry describes the club as similar to debate club; in a sense, mock trial is also a form of debate. However, Henry characterizes it as more about following a story, whereas debate focuses more on evidence.

“I felt like Hayfield needed a mock trial team. I think that there’s so much potential here [that] was going to waste,” Henry said.

The club may be useful for those who are interested in a career in law or those who simply find the court system fascinating.

“I want people to leave this club feeling like they learned something,” Henry said. “Whether they learned that they like mock trial, that they want to go into law or if they’re just ‘hey, this is a good use of my time,’ I want them to feel like they came out with something.”
