The reboot to the 2006 Tomb Raider sequel “The Cradle of Life,” has arrived; “Tomb Raider” burst into theaters worldwide on Mar. 16, 2018.

“Tomb Raider” centers around a woman known as Lara Croft who sets out on an adventure to discover why her father disappeared and stop a rogue organization from finding a tomb that can cause global genocide.

“Tomb Raider” stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, Daniel Wu as Croft’s ally Lu Ren, Walton Goggins as villain Mathias Vogel, Dominic West as Croft’s father Lord Richard Croft and Hannah John-Kamen as Sophie, Croft’s mentor.

“Tomb Raider” has solid acting that keeps the story moving. Vikander’s portrayal of Croft sometimes fell flat, but she was an aggressive and believable fighter who made action sequences quite enjoyable.

Daniel Wu plays a character who wants nothing to do with the story, but tags along anyway. Like any actor who plays a similar character in an action movie, his character knows why he’s a part of this story, what he wants to do and why he wants to help Lara as her ally; Wu was an expertly played member of the cast.

Walton Goggins plays a decent antagonist who acts threatening yet has great depth in his arc. Dominic West performed very well as Richard Croft; he’s the heart of the film and his story controls the emotions of the audience wonderfully.

The film’s CGI is mediocre with too many explosions, blood, traps, etc. There is not a massive overuse of CGI, but it still shows up whenever explosions or graphics are not necessary for the film, making it somewhat distracting.

A major issue of the movie was that it didn’t explore the origins of Lara Croft. They show how she knows how to fight and solve puzzles, but they didn’t explain how she knows to swim, survive in the wilderness and use weapons herself. The antagonists were underwhelming, as they were not terrifying at all. Their motives weren’t explained too much throughout the movie and were given less backstory than Lara Croft, making the film lack depth.

The film is very fast paced during the mid to last half of the movie. Unlike other video game adaptations that are very slow paced and have common issues, “Tomb Raider” has the conflicts and conversations occur straightforwardly, allowing the film to move faster than others. All the main plot points in “Tomb Raider” only take around five minutes or shorter; this video game based motion picture is changing the path for adaptations of the future.

The film has good action, and it is all heart pounding, scary and unexpected. The conflicts in the film happen when the audiences aren’t expecting it. Aspects of “Tomb Raider” can also be very violent whenever the protagonist reaches a certain weak point in combat, making the movie all around action-packed.

“Tomb Raider” is the ideal matinee show for adults, rather than a basic evening show with a full price ticket. Not as huge of a moneymaker as “Black Panther,” it would better work as an afternoon showing.

The ending of “Tomb Raider” sets up any potential sequels by recapping everything that has happened in the saga and what it all means for the future, showing why everything happened occurred. The conclusion leaves the door open for any continuation to the story of Lara Croft becoming the hero she’s destined to be: Tomb Raider.

Overall, if you enjoy the Tomb Raider video game series or the original Angelina Jolie series, I recommend “Tomb Raider.” If not, it is not worth the money.
